DYNAMAT Alternative

This was seen on the Bluebird List posted by David.

I removed all the old tar stuff. I'm glad I did this when it was still cold because it was easier to break off larger chunks then. I had left a few of the stubborn spots and didn't get back to them until it was warm and it is much harder to remove when it is hot. The floorboards had some surface rust so I treated it with rust reformer.

I was going to use Dynamat but I didn't want to spend that much. I found a great product that is very inexpensive. It is called Weathershield and it is made by a company called GAF. It is used as a freeze and leak barrier for roofing. It comes in a 3 foot by 150 foot roll for around $40 at Home Depot. It is about as thick as Dynamat and has a self adhesive backing. It does have a rough, granular surface that is similar to roofing shingles. It is easy to work with and conforms well to the curves and irregularities of the floor boards, firewall and the trans. tunnel.

Thanks David!

You need to take a trip over to A-1 Foam & Fabrics in Santa Ana. They have everything you could possibly need to do an interior. The address is: 1812 South Main Street, Santa Ana Ca 92707, 714-835-1522

We used an adhesive backed foam insulation that they sell, and it does a great job of insulating from noise, and temperatures. It comes in a 4 food roll, and can be cut to any length that you want. They also have several different thickness' to choose from. The stuff cuts very easily with a pair of scissors, and once you put it down it is not coming off. Did a whole car including the trunk for $30.00.

From Fergus O,

The stuff I bought was from Summit Racing, part number TRU-BLIP12406, $28 for a 4' x 6' sheet. The cheapest I found, and the sheet did both firewalls and the entire tunnel, I think I'll have enough for the package shelf, and might have enough for the drivers floorboard as well (although gotta be careful about drainage there, I think I wanna be able to see moisture coming up from below, if any). It is from a company called Tru-Max, in the safety section of their on-line catalog. I just used 3M spray-on adhesive, holds great. I sealed all the cut edges with good quality cloth duct tape. The sound reduction was remarkable, really makes things more pleasant.

We found a very good & cheap insulation to deaden sound and absorb some heat. It's like Thermo-tec and Dynamat but muuuuuch cheaper. The stuff is called "Peel & Seal". It is made by MFM Building Products Co. in Ohio. It comes in a roll (36" by 33.5') 100 square feet. We have use in doors, floors, hood, trunk, and heater boxes, Can mold to fit and easily cut with old scissors. Approx. cost is $70.00 US. Phone number is 740-622-2645. Did I mention that it is adhesive backed (& I do mean adhesive here) once it is on, it is a bear to peel off. The stuff was originally used to seal and stop the rattles on older mobile homes.
